I caught up with Ross, Co-Founder of Glasgow record label, Thanks For Nothing over a Pizza Hut buffetCan you introduce yourself and what you do for Thanks for Nothing Records?
Sup, my names Ross. I co-run TFN with my mate Pete and we split duties when it comes to just about every aspect of the label. Mainly though its just the usual duties arranging stuff for our bands like recording and putting stuff out and then the boring bit like post runs and stuff.
How did the label begin? Did you have it all planned out from the start? Or have you just taken things as they have came?
It started as my graded unit for my college course last year, it was a hypothetical project but I was pretty into the whole label thing so decided to use my little plan and got Pete involved and the next thing we knew were arranging a launch show and stuff. All happened real quick. The plan was rally rough we originally intended to just have one band then soon after decided that wasnt going to happen and started to hunt for new bands. We definately take things one day at a time, so much can happen in music so we just sit there, have fun and keep our options open.
Is there a certain set of skills you think that are needed to run a record label?
Its pretty easy to do what we’re doing since its pretty small time but to have a small label you just have to be kind of savvy about D.I.Y, have a decent knowledge of the industry and most of all be nice to people. Ive met a lot of folk through TFN and building relationships and contacts has ben key to progressing.
Do you think the ‘Digital Age’ has been a great help to ‘DIY’ record labels?
Yeah man, its been crucial. We use it so much with services like Bandcamp and then stuff like Facebook and Tumblr for promotion. Dont think a label like ours could exist without it to be honest.
What are your plans for the label for the rest of this year?
We’ve got some pretty big things happening to be honest, we release Heavy Hands self titled debut EP a few months back and have recently released a split EP for Disguise Your Beauty and My Friend The Arsonist. In the next few months we have a release for Heavy Hands which is a split with Canadian outfit Badlands which believe me is going to be superb and we will also be collaborating with our best pals at Pinky Swear Records on this one aswell. We also have Trial & Error’s debut EP coming out around the end of May which we are very stokedo be a part of. We will be working with a band from England in the summer but as of just now i can’t tell you who it is haha. Other exciting things are more work with MFTA and DYB and we will probably be looking to add another band after summer and just take things from there.
How do you go about finding new acts to sign? Do you find them online? Or at local shows?
Its really just me and Pete coming across something that just blows us away and approaching the bands. Thats how its been with the bands we have at the moment and we will be using the same kind of thing in future. We have been scouring the internet for some bands for new territories, this is anothe proof that the digital age is working wonders for music. Local Shows are a hub for talent and thats where we picked up Trial & Error, we knew the guys and saw them at the Heavy Hands release show and one song in me and Pete just looked at each other and nodded, we asked them if theyd like to work with us pretty mush as soon as they cam off the stage.
You’re having a ‘Birthday Show’ on the 30th July, do you have anything special lined up for it?
We had some stuff lined up haha, but we’re just gonna get everyone together and play a big show and have a laugh. Every band on the bill is full of our mates so we’re just gonna have a big TFN family get together and have a nice big show.
As I was personally with Ross at the time of the interview, I decided to give him some quick fire questions
Pizza or Pasta? Pizza
Backstreet Boys or N*SYNC? N*SYNC
Vinyl or CD? VINYL
Bad Boys 1 or Bad Boys 2? BAD BOYS 2
DC or Marvel? NEITHER
- Any hidden talents? I CAN CATCH AVERAGE SIZED SWEETS IN MY MOUTH WHENEVER SOMEONE THROWS THEM AT ME.

happy to announce that Start Today have finished recording our demo with our good friend Louis Craighead (Grader) and this is a rough mix of one of our songs. Liam Manson was kind enough to step in throw a verse or 2 on the track. keep your eyes peeled, we’re hoping to go a bit further than just a demo!
